Why is it called “Louis XIII”? To pay tribute to the French King Louis XIII (1610-1643), the Rémy Cointreau company named its rarest Cognac “Louis XIII.” During King Louis XIII’s reign, he not only encouraged the emerging Cognac industry in the Poitou-Charentes region of northern Bordeaux, but also fostered its flourishing development. He also who was the first French monarch to recognize cognac as a category of brandy in its own right.
It is also a tribute to the time when the House of Rémy Martin was first established in the Cognac region. The House of Rémy Martin has lived in the Cognac region for generations, producing high-quality Cognac since the early 1700s. In 1874, Paul-Émile Rémy Martin used the oldest eaux-de-vie “Eaux-de-vie” in the House to blend the most precious Cognac, which was then bottled in exquisite crystal bottles and named “Louis XIII” in honor of Louis XIII’s contributions over two hundred years ago.
Why is “Louis XIII” so rare? Time and terroir are at the heart of LOUIS XIII cognac. ” A ‘terroir’ is the intersection of climate, soil, plants and human action. In the case of “Louis XIII”, the term ‘terroir’ relates to a very specific geographical subzone, the cru of Grande Champagne. The terroir of Grande Champagne is essential to LOUIS XIII, its chalky soil influences the flavor of “Louis XIII” cognac.
“Louis XIII” exclusively uses grapes grown in the Grande Champagne region of Cognac, which is recognized as the best grape-growing area. Of the six major grape-growing areas in Cognac, Grande Champagne is the most important and is considered the premier cru of Cognac region, boasting the best quality. “Louis XIII” is made only from the grapes produced in Grande Champagne, distilled and aged to become the eaux-de-vie ‘Eaux-de-vie’. It is then blended with up to 1,200 different finest eaux-de-vie ‘Eaux-de-vie’ to create “Louis XIII.” Although the bottle of “Louis XIII” does not indicate a specific year of aging process, the eaux-de-vie ‘Eaux-de-vie’ inside have been aged for a minimum of 40 years and up to 100 years, thus each drop containing history.
Not only is the Spirit of “Louis XIII” rare, but the bottles are also precious. In 1850, Paul-Émile Rémy Martin accidentally acquired a simple 16th-century flask found in the ruins of the Jarnac battlefield of the French Religious Wars. Paul registered the rights to reproduce it and had it remade in crystal glass, becoming the exclusive bottle for “Louis XIII”.
The unique shape and finish of the “Louis XIII” decanter has remained mostly unchanged to this day, each one hand-cut, blown and individually engraved and numbered so that no two decanters are the same.
Depending on the bottle size, “Louis XIII” is generally available in four regular volume versions: 50 ml, 700 ml, 3 liters, and 6 liters, all with an alcohol content of 40%. Only 100 bottles of the 3-liter version are produced each year, and there are only 45 bottles of the 6-liter version available each year, making it exceptionally rare.
In addition to the four regular versions mentioned above, “Louis XIII” also has limited-edition Rare Cask versions released irregularly. The Rare Cask version presented at our tasting event had an alcohol content of 42.1% and was said to be priced at over seven figures in NT dollars, making it extremely rare and hard to come by.
